The Picture on my Desk

I used to travel over seas and teach: three to four times a year and four to six weeks each time. My youngest one used to travel with me, and many of my students were amazed by her ability to adjust to my demanding teaching and traveling schedules. I would teach three 3-hour sessions each day for three days, then take the red-eye flight to the next city and do it again next morning. Some days when I wake up I would be confused as in which city I am, and the only constant by my side, was my young daughter - even if she kicks so hard at night that I could not really sleep. The truth is, she was my anchor to reality, the reality of being a mum.

COVID put a stop on my teaching / performing / traveling career, and I became an elementary school music teacher. The transition was difficult because suddenly, I have to convince young children who had very little exposure to music making, that music is an adventure, a discipline AND is fun. I am also in a great position where I can teach the children about worshiping God with integrity, which is a wonderful responsibility that requires much theological, liturgical, spiritual, musical, and pedagogical preparation.

...

I set my children's photo by my computer, so I am constantly reminded, that I am a Mum. I am a Mum of four beautiful, independent, loving, and creative children. In the middle of learning to be an effective Elementary / Middle School music teacher; in the middle of catechizing students through music; in the middle of scheduling events, writing notes for parents, preparing concerts, arranging choral music, composing instrumental parts... I lift up my head from the computer, and smiling at me are the four beautiful faces. Then I breathe, give thanks to the Lord, and enjoy a little moment of comfort.

Thank God for giving me four children, four little anchors who holds me down amid all torrents.
